Learn how to coppice, and other practical woodland skills, at our Sunday workshops in January and February.

We'll also be doing some clearing ('bramble-bashing') and perhaps some thinning by felling, or ring-barking to create standing dead wood for habitat.

No skills or experience needed; training and tools provided. Dress for working outdoors in the (muddy) woods.
Lunch (hot veggie/vegan food and delicious cakes) laid on.

Sundays  5, 12, 19 & 26 Jan and 2 Feb.
You can opt for as many sessions as you like (but if you book, please do be sure to come).

. Meet at the Tree Nursery at 10.

Places limited - please book atworkshops@km551818.demon.co.uk

Coppicing is the management of forest trees so that they give a regular crop of poles (for fences, trellises, broomsticks etc). Cutting them to the ground every few years promotes re-growth, creates bushy habitat for small birds, and extends the lives of short-lived trees like hazel. We've been coppicing Wick Community Woodland for some years now and you can see the effects.

Latest on Queens Road to Central footpath

From the Transport Liasion Meeting Minutes

NB gave an update on progress to open a wheelchair accessible link between Walthamstow Queen’s Road and Walthamstow Central station. He said that Opening of the station link was now scheduled for April 2014.

The wheelchair accessible ramp at Walthamstow Queens Road had been completed in June 2013 but the opening of the station entrance was awaiting the completion of the path at the Walthamstow Central end of the link where a footway through the car park was due for completion at the end of March 2014. CCTV cameras were being installed in the Edison Close estate between the two stations to tackle the issue of anti-social behaviour from gangs in the area. Installation of the cameras would be complete by early 2014.

At the Exeter Road entrance to Walthamstow Queen’s Road Oyster Readers had been installed. But for revenue protection reasons, London Overground had asked that a ticket vending machine was installed as well.  This required planning permission along with the construction of a protective row of bollards and enhanced lighting arrangements.

Cllr Moss asked whether London Overground routinely ordered new Oyster readers for new stations or whether there was any recycling of old Oyster readers.

RG asked whether London Overground (and London Underground) could display more London Connections maps. He understood that there were issues to do with branding about displaying the maps, but they were very useful in showing how TfL and London Overground services interchanged with services run by other operators. TfL’s concerns over branding should not triumph over the great value of these maps to the travelling public. It was suggested that the matter might usefully be raised with London Travelwatch. SR also agreed to take up the matter again with TfL.

Lea Bridge Station works to start in 2014

From the Transport Liaison Meeting  Minutes
  1. Lea Valley Line

PH noted that work was due to begin on the Lea Bridge Road station in April 2014 with trains due to start running in December 2014. It was noted that there was an opportunity from a regeneration point of view to advertise the forthcoming opening of the station perhaps through putting up a big banner near the station site.

Final approval is near for a third track on the Lea Valley Line between Coppermill Junction and Angel Road. The new track will include two crossovers one at Tottenham Hale and one at Angel Road.
