North Hub

Subject: Please help us to save our building

As you may have heard – LBWF wishes to terminate our lease early and to close the North Hub to build flats on the site.

This has come as quite a shock – we signed a 5 year lease in October 2016. We only found out about the plans as I was trying to negotiate an extension to the lease. Other than one email from LBWF stating they are disposing of the site we have had no further communications. We are working with the local ward councillors (who have been very supportive) to try and move discussions forward.

I must stress that Age UK WF and Reaching Out East as organisations are NOT ceasing to function but are having to plan how we will deliver services in the borough. You will appreciate that  we have both worked very hard to make the North Hub a success and a valuable resource for the community. In addition to our own activities we have the Crest Day Care Services, WF Parkinson’s Group, WF Low Vision Form  and the Nelft Falls Prevention Services all using the building too.

What you can do to help:

Paper copies will be available from the Hub soon

·         Write to your local Waltham Forest MP – ask them to represent your concerns about this decision and  to follow up with the council to find out more

Best wishes

Green Flag

Hello everyone,

Lloyd Park has been awarded a Green Flag again this year.

However, we haven’t yet been judged! This year, Lloyd Park is due a mystery shop, rather than a full judging visit. Even though mystery shops aren’t undertaken until anytime late July-December, Keep Britain Tidy have announced all mystery shop sites as winners.

For this reason, Lloyd Park will be announced as a winner in Waltham Forest News and we’ve put up the new flag, but we won’t be doing any other significant publicity.

You’re welcome to contact me if you have any questions. We try and maintain Lloyd Park to the highest standard possible, all year round.

Kind regards,

High Tide Theatre

Subject: HighTide Theatre comes to London's Walthamstow for the very first time

Hi there,

I hope all is well with you.

I’m getting in touch about HighTide Theatre, who will bring their festival to Walthamstow for the very first time this September with a brand new theatre space, world premieres, family shows and pop up food stalls.. The full diverse and varied programme will include three headline plays, 12 comedy and cabaret shows, two hours of talks, 11 pieces from new writers, shows for schools and families, a site specific work and street food. The full press release can be read here.

Having celebrated its tenth anniversary in 2016, the festival of new writing renowned for finding, nurturing and showcasing the country’s best new playwrights and presenting  exciting new work.

Bringing The Mix to Walthamstow town centre will mean that high quality work will be showcased right on people’s doorsteps in an area where 55% of residents are classed within low cultural engagement segments, as well as enabling the borough to develop partnerships beneficial to the area’s cultural sector. Free and discounted tickets are available to those with a Waltham Forest postcode and HighTide Theatre will be working to help young people find routes into creative roles, in collaboration with local organisation Big Creative Training, hosting a traineeship and work experience placements.

The Headline plays include:

  • The world premiere of Heroine, an exploration of patriotism and nativism in modern Britain by Nessah Muthywhich follows young ex-soldier Grace as she struggles to re-assimilate into society following a medical discharge from the army
  • The world premiere of Kanye the First charting a second coming of the global icon by Sam Steiner, looking at identity and guilt in contemporary culture
  • The return of Theresa Ikoko’s critically acclaimed and multi award winning Girls, the tale of three young friends who are kidnapped in Nigeria

The full programme in Walthamstow will include a late night comedy and cabaret strand, a series of talks, a site-specific production and a strand of work showcasing and supporting local creative talent. Waltham Forest has a younger than average population with increasing numbers of families with young children moving to the area and so there will be shows for pre-school children and for school groups.

The Festival will be presented in both Suffolk, where it has been for the last 10 years and Walthamstow and full information can be found here. The Walthamstow Festival will run 26 September – 8 October. It would be great to know if you were interested in talking to any of the writers from this year’s festival, or if you plan feature the festival in any way on Waltham Forest Our Community? Please do not hesitate to get in contact if you require any images or further information.

I look forward to hearing from you.

All the best,
Amy

Bulb Planting

“Hi all,

This email is just to make you aware that the Council will be having a bulb planting weekend in October where we will be supplying residents with bulbs to plant in locations of their choosing in order to beautify their local area.

To assist my colleagues with planning, we would like our volunteers/resident groups who would like to get involved to identify any areas (parks, grass verges, tree pits etc) that they think may benefit and we will begin to map these out and confirm suitability. Please email: elijah.sobanjo@walthamforest.gov.uk who will be coordinating the event and look out for the official announcement which will have the confirmed date of the event.”

Cheers

Campaign Bootcamp

Abigail,
Applications for an amazing training opportunity run by our friends at Campaign Bootcamp are open, and there's only a couple weeks left to apply!
Campaign Bootcamp is a week-long residential training that gives activists the confidence, skills and community they need to run effective campaigns. After the week of training is over, graduates get access to a mentor, follow-up events and a thriving network of support.
If you want to nurture your campaigns, this is the training for you.
Are you interested in applying? This will be the last residential training of 2017. It'll run from Monday 16th October - Saturday 21st October 2017. The deadline to apply is 9am on Tuesday 22nd August. Click here to find out more and apply.
Or maybe you know people who might benefit from our training?
A group fighting for change in their community that needs support?
An activist that needs a confidence boost?
A campaigner living far from a lively activist scene?
If so, please encourage them to apply by forwarding this email on to campaigners and activist groups you love. We have loads of scholarships available to make sure that no one is priced out of attending.
More than 60% of applicants come on a full or partial scholarship - that means for most people, training, food, accommodation and travel is free!
If you have any questions about Bootcamp, just drop their Community and Training Coordinator, Tamara-Jade, an email at hello@campaignbootcamp.org.
Thank you and happy campaigning!
Tricia and the team at SumOfUs

Philip is going through a messy divorce. To make himself some money and give his life a boost of adrenalin, he devises a cunning scheme to rob a West End department store. Needing help, he enlists John and Dave - two fellow sales people who could not be more unalike. The plot seems to be going well until John's and Dave's wives join forces to investigate their husband's odd behaviour...

With the charm of "The Lavender Hill Mob" and the unlikely believability of the Hatton Garden Safety Deposit Box heist, Audacity will make you laugh out loud... and question your own morals!

With some mild language and comedic violence this play may not be suitable for children.
