Leytonstone House - Bethnal Green Industrial Schools
BETHNAL GREEN POOR LAW UNION'S INDUSTRIAL SCHOOLS, Leytonstone
WALTHAM FOREST LOCAL PLAN - SITES
The Local Plan has identified the Tesco at Leytonstone Town Centre as a site that can be developed with over 1,000 homes, but it is adjacent to Leytonstone House, a Grade II listed building, and the various buildings around the curtilage known as the Bethnal Green Industrial Schools. If the Council's view prevails tower blocks could dominate the area and ruin the setting of the historic buildings. Leytonstone is a small local shopping area and tower blocks are inappropriate for such a site - just look at the damage the tower blocks in Walthamstow Town Centre has done to the area.
Footnote to Planning Designations - *This site has been identified as a location where a building/buildings of 18 storeys or more may be acceptable, within an indicative range of 18 - 28 storeys. This is subject to contextual analysis, a robust placemaking strategy, and assessment against all relevant policies set out within Local Plan Part 1, including Policy 54 Tall Buildings.
