The wicked Witch Craft is sick of sweets, so she’s decided to have Hansel and Gretel, the Woodcutter’s children, for her dinner! The only one who can foil her evil plan is Fairy Mary – if only she could remember where she left her magic wand... In the meantime, Dame Esme Handle, assisted by her daughters Pan and Broom, are living in the forest dreaming of a better life. Brave Prince George is in the woods too, looking for his stolen treasure, and maybe the girl of his dreams. But look out for the wolves! But we’re worried their plans boil down to mostly a pub with a side order of “quirky entertainment” (their words). That’s not what so many of us in Walthamstow fought so long and hard for. Soho Theatre’s plans with Waltham Forest Cinema Trust are for a building that provides a wide range of uses for the widest appeal. We urgently need your help to make sure Antic works with Soho Theatre and doesn’t ‘go it alone’ with plans that don’t do justice to a building that could draw people to Walthamstow from far and wide. It's a critical time for the former Granada's future, following last month's news of plans by the UCKG to sell the building to Antic. Soho Theatre continues its education work in the borough following the success of October’s Half Term Young Theatremakers week – applications for 2015 are now open. We've got Christmas at Soho lined up but, so you know, we're ready to come to Walthamstow... Latest News   Last month news came of the UCKG’s plans to sell the former Granada to pub chain Antic. Soho Theatre and Waltham Forest Cinema Trust released a statement following the announcement, which you can read here. Now is a critical time for the former Granada. With the Council’s continued support, we’re working hard to reach an agreement with Antic which can secure the genuine entertainment use and community benefit that this building and everyone’s efforts deserve. As soon as we are in a position to say more about that, we will. Meantime, we hope you enjoy our video – we’re ready to come to Walthamstow and we’re passionate about creating a venue for everyone.   Soho Theatre education work in Waltham Forest   The first Soho Young Theatremakers course, supported by the London Borough of Waltham Forest, took place during October Half Term. Twenty young people aged 11-18 participated in the free week of theatre making, exploring the theme of food and memories led by local artists Slap Haddock and culminating in a final performance in front of delighted families and friends. Feedback from the week was overwhelmingly positive. "Our son came on Monday and we thought he would not last the week. He just loved it. Couldn’t wait to get back the next day.” "I just loved it. To have a 17 year coming home each day animated and excited saying how much he loved it, was great." “My daughter loved every minute of it...it was the first time she’s played her sax with anyone, so in terms of building her confidence as a performer, playing her instrument was really brilliant as well.” Soho Young Theatremakers - Walthamstow applications open for 2015   Following the success of our October Half Term course, we’re looking forward to continuing our education work in the borough. Our new ten week Soho Young Theatremaker courses, aimed at 14-19 year olds living within Waltham Forest, will commence from January 15th at Walthamstow School for Girls. Over ten weeks, participants learn how to create and perform their own theatre show, and receive an insight into what it’s like to work within the creative industries. As many of you will know Organiclea now run the nursery at Hawkwood which used to be the councils' plant nursery. I was lucky enough to visit it this week and it is an amazing place. A huge amount of energy is put in by volunteers and it is such a peaceful place so close to London.

I was visting to collect chilli seeds which they are encouraging schools to grow so that Waltham Forest can be self sufficient in chillis!

This year we'll be makingwassail bowls and then taking them to a local house to be filled with wassail drink (apple juice!) on the way down to Wingfield Park, blessing apple trees along the way. We'll be revising a couple of old wassail songs, and learning a new one - the Sugar Wassail.   Sun 12th Jan - "grown up" Wassail 2pm, upstairs at the Nags Head. We'll meet to learn the songs in parts as usual, and perform there at 4.30pm. Then the plan is to visit a couple of homes - including the hives at BEE17 - on the way up to Chestnuts Farm allotments by the Town Hall. They've offered to host us in their community room and we'll wassail the trees and beehives in their orchard. A posse of would-be heroes are here to save the day! The love-sick Ali Barber (who pines for the Princess), his dim witted brother Singbad the sailor and his fearsome mother, Dame Barber, are ready to intervene and foil the villain's fiendish plot.

I’m very happy to announce the premier screening of losing the Marshes, a true story of the Olympics on the 12^th November, at Red Gallery, Making Something Out Of Nothing season. This screening will be free and there’ll be a panelled discussion after the screening that will be filmed on the issues raised and attempt to look at the bigger picture around the world. I am very proud of this film, and if I’m honest amazed it actually is finished considering the difficulties that it and I have faces to make it. I hope you can attend the premier.

 

Thank you to those who attended either of the test screenings, your feedback was invaluable and helped to complete the film. Losing the Marshes has been the most difficult and challenging film I’ve made with the edit taking 4x longer than any other film; this was down to the complexity of the subject, which spans over 100 years and the amount of footage shot.

 

Losing the Marshes is my 2^nd feature documentary after Carnaby St Undressed a social history of London’s swinging 60s’, which continues to be broadcast in the UK. I am very excited to premier it atRed Gallery’s Making something Out Of Nothing season. It’s very fitting as every broadcaster and funding body approached expressed the importance of the film but said they couldn’t help. Shot on the very best broadcast equipment Losing the Marshes has had to be begged, pleaded, borrowed and fitted around others films and commercial and marketing work to get it made. Everyone in, or who worked on the film has done so out of their own charity, from the composing and recording of the original music score, photography, the promotion and equipment, I have been humbled by their generosity.

Making Something Out Of Nothing, RED GALLERY examines the intersection of ideas, identities, and the commodification of ‘cool’ in the cosmopolis, by bringing together academics, creatives, innovators, and social entrepreneurs, with a series of programmes that explore the implications of subculture, identity, ownership, technology, cultural echoes and migrancy.

 

Shot over 5 years, Losing the Marshes observes the changing landscape of the area and the people that surround the Olympic site one of the most deprived areas of Britain and leaves us wondering what will be the Olympic legacy.

 

This is the story of how property developers bought public land, using public money for private profit under the guise of the Olympic Games. The official cost of £9.2billion, differs from news agencies and independent observers who’s estimate this cost between £18-24billion far from the original budget of £2.6billion. Losing the Marshes, a true story of the Olympics is about the role of public space; it’s importance and how urban communities coexist. This is the story of what this land was and how it was stolen.
